Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Comal County,
located in New Braunfels, provides fire insurance and extended coverage to the
Central Texas area. The association's basic objective is to provide maximum
coverage at reasonable rates to
residents of the area in mutually beneficial ways.
Farmers Mutual was formed more than 100 years ago when it was difficult to
get insurance companies to provide fire coverage to rural areas. In 1889, a
group of central Texans took matters in their own hands and formed a mutual
fire insurance association.
The purpose of the association was for neighbors to form a cooperative
organization in order to share the financial loss if a member's property were
destroyed by fire. Some of the original directors and officers included August
Triesch, Charles Alves and H.A. Rose.
Present officers are Tim Salge, president; Dyana L. Faust,
secretary/treasurer; and Charles J. Knibbe, vice president. The concept
that guided the formation of the association has not changed, but coverage
provided has kept pace with changing times. Today, in addition to
fire insurance, extended coverage is available, which covers a multitude of
other perils including wind, hail and theft.
Farmers Mutual is very active in the central Texas region. The majority
of association members live in the area, and the association in turn invests
in the community by using area banks as depositories for funds. The
association invests its surplus funds primarily in Texas municipalities and
school districts through the purchase of bonds.
Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Comal County engages in
a continuing review of coverages and rates. Management and staff are dedicated
to responding to members' needs in a prompt and professional fashion. An
in-house agency provides access to personal liability, farm liability, auto
and various other insurance coverages.
The association has never emphasized growth for its own sake, but rather the
goal of being the best, not necessarily the biggest. The association continues
to prosper in a manner that is consistent with basic objectives: that of
